This antibody recognizes CD56-positive cells. CD56 is a type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein also known as NCAM (Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule). NCAM is expressed on NK cells and a subpopulation of T-cells known as large granular lymphocytes. NCAM appears to play a role in homotypic adhesion of neuronal cells, but the significance of NCAM has not been clearly defined.
