Paired helical filament (PHF) is a major component of the neurofibrillary tangles involved in the pathology of Alzheimer and quote;s disease. PHFs are composed of the microtubule-associated protein tau in a hyper-phosphorylated state (ref1). Tau protein is produced by a single gene expressed predominantly in neurons. The Tau gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, yielding six different isoforms of tau in the adult brain.
