The parvoviruses are a group of DNA viruses that infect many species. The parvoviruses do not contain sufficient DNA to direct their replication in host cells, and are split into two groups based on their requirements for replication. One of these groups is the adeno-associated viruses (AAVs), which can multiply only in cells which are co-infected with a helper adenovirus. Adeno-associated viruses are not known to be human pathogens.
