At the recent Biennial Conference on Chemical Education and American Chemical Society meetings, Thermo Fisher Scientific conducted a fun quiz to test participants' spectral interpretation skills. We presented spectra from infrared, Raman and NMR instrumentation and then asked participants to select a matching compound name from a list of multiple choices.

The purpose of this experiment is to extract eugenol from whole cloves by co-distillation with indirect steam, steam that is generated in situ. Eugenol will be extracted from the distillate with dichloromethane and analyzed using the Thermo Scientific™ picoSpin™ 45 or 80 NMR spectrometers.
