Advances in analytical technology have made oral fluid testing more of a reality in forensic toxicology. Improvements in sample preparation methods and innovations such as high resolution accurate mass spectrometry (HRAM-MS) provide the necessary sensitivity for identifying cannabinoids, THC, stimulants, and a wide variety of drugs of abuse in oral fluid.
Blood and urine are recognized as primary biological matrices for forensic drug testing, with major limitations related to invasive sample collection or lack of sample integrity due to adulteration. The immediate attraction of oral fluid over these matrices is that it offers expedient, non-invasive sample collection at the point of service, easily supervised, thus reducing the problems associated with integrity.

Professor Dr. Dr. (h.c.) Marilyn A. Huestis recently retired as a tenured senior investigator and Chief, Chemistry and Drug Metabolism Section, IRP, National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health, after 23 years of conducting controlled drug administration studies. She is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, on the Steering Committee of The Lambert Center for the Study of Medicinal Cannabis and Hemp, Thomas Jefferson Medical School, Philadelphia, PA, on the Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) Science Advisory Board, Consultant to Thermo Fisher Scientific – for the chromatography and mass spectrometry division, Senior Scientific Advisor of NMS Labs, Consultant to the US Department of Transportation, and President of Huestis & Smith Toxicology, LLC. Her research program focuses on discovering mechanisms of action of cannabinoid agonists and antagonists, effects of in utero drug exposure, oral fluid testing, driving under the influence of drugs, and the neurobiology and pharmacokinetics of novel psychoactive substances.
