This presentation describes the analysis of GC-amenable pesticide residues in herbal preparations and tuber crops like yam (Dioscorea spp.), taro (Colocasia esculenta) and sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.). The use of the accelerated solvent extraction technique at elevated temperature and pressures proved critical for the fast and efficient solvent extraction of analytes from tubers. This presentation will describe our experience, challenges, and successes in the development, validation and implementation of methods for GC-MS/MS analysis of pesticide residues in herbal preparations using conventional sample extraction, and in tuber crops using the accelerated solvent extraction technique.

Zareen Khan has several years of research experience in the field of pesticide residue analysis. She has developed several innovative and cost-effective residue analysis methods in challenging food matrices, which includes a large-scale multi-residue procedure for selective and sensitive analysis of about 300+ pesticides and persistent organic pollutants in tobacco. She has extensive knowledge of sample preparation and applications of GC-MS and LC-MS techniques in food safety and metabolomics research. She has widely published in peer reviewed journals.

Dr Shridhar Jayaram Gawade was awarded his PhD by the Institute of Science, Mumbai, in 2003 and has since gained extensive experience in analytical chemistry. He currently assists customers with the implementation of new methods and troubleshooting existing methods including multi-analyte methods for pesticide residues.
