Biomaterials, by definition, are materials that have been adapted to interact with a biological system, usually to replace or improve a natural function. They can come from nature itself or be manmade – developed from a variety of materials such as metals, polymers, composites, etc.

Biomaterials are usually composites of various materials such as polymers, ceramics, and even metals. And they’re often used in medicine or dentistry which frequently requires a high level of oversight. Hence research into biomaterials can be extremely tricky and rewarding at the same time.

Biomaterials: a silver lining in wound dressings

Wound dressings with silver are now widely used to minimize bacterial infections when treating certain types of injuries or sores. The effectiveness of these dressings depends on the chemical and physical nature of the silver used and its distribution throughout the dressing.

The spectroscopic imaging capability of the Thermo Scientific™ ESCALAB™ 250Xi X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS) Microprobe* makes it an ideal instrument for assessing the quality of this type of wound dressing. The concentration of silver in such materials is often very low, requiring a highly sensitive instrument.

The ESCALAB 250Xi Microprobe can be used to determine the distribution of silver within a wound dressing on both a large scale (through stage mapping) and a small scale (through parallel imaging).

The ESCALAB 250Xi has been used to successfully map the concentration of silver on a wound dressing, defining it on millimeter and micrometer scales.
