Measuring Our Progress

Since 2008, Thermo Fisher Scientific has been tracking key metrics that illustrate our success in making better, more efficient use of energy at our sites. We also set out to track the safety of working environments for our employees.

Because we are a large and complex company with many locations, we adopted a method known as "indexing" — where the metrics are based on a selection of the largest sites in our company. To determine which sites to include in our index, we began with a list of the largest sites on a global basis. We then deleted sites from the index if they had been acquired within the past two years, or undergone major structural changes during that time. The remaining list comprised an index of 11 of our largest sites as a basis for comparison. We are reviewing our results for 2009 and will post the updated information here.

Our goal as a company is to grow and continue to create value for all of our constituents: employees, customers and shareholders. At the same time, we strive to improve our efficiency and economy of resources. Our company-wide Practical Process Improvement Program (PPI), which is Thermo Fisher Scientific’s version of Six Sigma, is our methodology for continuous improvement across our businesses and functions. PPI empowers teams of employees to identify process inefficiencies, remove waste, and develop solutions for streamlining the jobs they perform every day. The added benefit of the PPI program is that it applies not only to manufacturing, but to any job function.
