In addition to its products directly serving the environmental instrumentation and safety markets, Thermo Fisher is an industry leader in designing eco-friendly products, ranging from consumables to lab hoods to freezers, as well as a wide range of innovative environmental monitoring and testing products that help protect both environmental and human health.

Eco-Friendly Products

• Our laboratory workstations business has been recognized for its environmental stewardship in the laboratory furniture industry. The business's green efforts are integrated into the manufacturing strategies and processes for its laboratory furniture and high-efficiency fume hoods. Because designs are benchmarked to the U.S. Green Building Council LEED building rating system, we can help customers who are pursuing LEED certification for their facilities.
• Our biological safety cabinets, lab freezers and other electric-powered equipment are designed for exceptional energy efficiency, resulting in reduced carbon dioxide emissions and lower operating costs. The MSC-Advantage biological safety cabinet with advanced motor technology consumes 60 percent less energy than competing motor technologies.
• The Thermo Scientific Orion Green electrode is the first lab or field pH electrode that fully complies with the European Union's Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS). The green electrodes contain no mercury, lead or other hazardous substances, permitting easy disposal.
• Our Fisher Scientific brand offers customers an "Environmentally Friendly Product Guide" containing products that meet one or more of 11 green standards, such as energy efficiency and recycled content.

Thermo Scientific Environmental Monitoring and Testing Products

• Thermo Fisher is a leading provider of advanced air quality monitoring instruments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
• Our air quality monitoring and detection systems help energy utilities and other companies meet guidelines for stack emissions. Working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and American Electric Power, one of the nation's largest utilities, Thermo Fisher developed the Thermo Scientific Freedom System. The Freedom System uses Thermo Fisher's unique, atomic-fluorescence technology, providing continuous monitoring of stack gases to detect mercury levels down to parts per trillion. Many of the largest U.S. utilities have selected Freedom System for their facilities.
• Globally, leading energy providers also use 2,500 of our continuous emissions monitoring systems to measure 3 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, data that is essential for their emissions reduction efforts.
• We enable our customers make the world not only cleaner, but healthier and safer as well. We are a leader in food safety, a mounting concern today amid increasing incidents of food and water contamination.
• Scientists are able to detect extremely low concentrations of pesticide residues in food and water, dioxins and other emerging consumer threats like melamine by using our mass spectrometers.
• Nearly 22,000 of our handheld X-ray fluorescence analyzers are in use, analyzing soil, detecting contaminants in toys and other consumer goods, and identifying metals to facilitate recycling.
