Recycling

Recycling is ingrained in Thermo Fisher’s worldwide operations. From manufacturing facilities to sales offices, we capitalize on every opportunity to advance sustainability. And we build recycling capability into our products so our customers can do the same in their business.

For example, in order to reduce the use of disposable chemical containers in large-volume orders, Thermo Fisher Scientific developed the returnable “FisherPak,” a stainless steel container approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. After taking delivery of chemicals, customers simply return the FisherPak for reuse.

For chemicals in smaller volumes, Thermo Fisher created the “EcoSafPak” made from 100 percent recyclable, biodegradable materials that replace plastic foam.

Our laboratory chemicals business also developed a method to recycle expired chemicals. Instead of disposing of all chemicals that are past their expiration dates, several of our facilities now reuse these chemicals in non-critical applications or sell them to other companies where the expired chemicals still meet process specifications.

In the same spirit of recycling and reuse, many of our plastic molding facilities recycle waste from molding and extrusion processes, reusing the material internally or returning it to suppliers.
