Thermo Fisher Scientific Fulfills Oil & Gas Application Needs with Innovative Process Instruments at ACHEMA 2009

Leading Technologies Quantify Hydrocarbon Products With Greater Specificity

FRANKFURT (May 11, 2009) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, will introduce its portfolio of instruments specifically designed to fulfill critical application needs within the oil and gas industry at ACHEMA 2009. Building on its engineering legacy, the company’s rugged, reliable instruments provide real-time control through accurate, repeatable measurement, enabling customers to minimize product waste, improve quality control and meet environmental regulations. These instruments will be displayed in booth H40 and J41 in Hall 10 at ACHEMA 2009 in Frankfurt, Germany, from May 11-15.

“Reducing costs and bringing more money to the bottom line is every company’s mission, particularly in today’s economic climate,” said Bill Summers, vice president and general manager of process systems, process instruments at Thermo Fisher Scientific. “Having served the oil and gas industry for more than 25 years, we’ve accumulated a tremendous wealth of knowledge on specific applications and brought a number of instruments to market that deliver significant value and a rapid return on investment by streamlining processes, simplifying operations and minimizing downtime.”

One of the company’s newest and most-innovative instruments is the Thermo Scientific M-PULSe, a multi-path ultrasonic liquid flow measurement system. It features a patented four-path, out-of-plane design that allows for accurate measurement of ±0.10percent for turbulent, laminar and transitional regions to ensure minimal lost and unaccounted for product during custody transfer. In addition, the system’s wide viscosity range enables accurate measurement of liquid hydrocarbons from as low as 0.06 cSt up to 1500 cSt with no recalibration required between runs for optimization of multi-product hydrocarbon pipelines. The M-PULSe also offers increased daily throughput, less downtime and minimal maintenance.

To ensure process optimization, the Thermo Scientific Sarasota 960 density meter can be used in conjunction with the M-PULSe to achieve repeatable density input. With accuracy of ±0.1 kg/m3 (±0.0062 lb/ft3), the meter provides continuous, online density monitoring for real-time control. It also features a straight-through sensor that offers an unobstructed flow path to ensure minimal pressure drop and high flow rates during custody transfer. The meter is compact and lightweight, which simplifies installation and can also tolerate significant plant vibration for increased durability.

The new Thermo Scientific AutoPILOT PRO, a six-run gas flow computer and remote telemetry unit, is built on an expandable technology platform. It scales from a simple, single-run measurement application to multiple runs with full station control without requiring an upgrade to a secondary platform, which helps customers consolidate equipment and reduce capital expenses. The AutoPILOT PRO is designed with built-in Ethernet and USB connectivity and incorporates a full 32-bit processor, enabling rapid calculations and more accurate quantification of natural gas during custody transfer to help increase profitability.

Capable of measuring up to 32 runs, the Thermo Scientific AutoEXEC expandable flow computer and remote telemetry unit incorporates both natural gas and petroleum liquid measurement functionality. The system accurately calculates flow at an unprecedented rate of up to 10 times per second – simultaneously on all runs – and enables customers to standardize and consolidate measurement applications with one unit. Like all Thermo Scientific flow computers, it is easy to install with no programming required, simple to operate to further increase productivity, and built to withstand rugged conditions to maximize uptime.

Thermo Fisher Scientific also offers a line of premier online process analyzers that serve a number of refining and petrochemical applications. The flagship product is the fast and flexible Thermo Scientific Prima δB, a magnetic sector process mass spectrometer that provides complete gas stream analysis in seconds. It features rapid multi-stream switching capabilities, and offers increased sensitivity and precision for dynamic process control. With a worldwide installed base, the Prima $delta;B is a cost-effective alternative to multiple process GC systems and features an ultra-low maintenance 32- to 64-port RMS inlet system for optimum sample analysis and operating cost reduction.

“The mass spectrometer here in Sasolburg, South Africa is working like a charm!” said Jaco Steyn, principal technical officer with Sasol Technology Ltd. The company is primarily using the Prima δB for monitoring the correct H2/CO ratio going into the gas-to-liquids reactor and reports that it is 10 times more precise than the gas chromatography (GC) system it replaced.
