Thermo Fisher Scientific Introduces Leak Detection Capability for Large Diameter Pipes at ACHEMA 2009

Sarasota 200 Flowmeter Offers Solution to Minimize Potential for Flooding; Complete family of Flowmeters on Display

FRANKFURT (May 11, 2009) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced it will introduce the new leak detection capabilities of the Thermo Scientific Sarasota 200 ultrasonic multi-path flowmeter at ACHEMA 2009. The Sarasota 200 is designed to directly measure flow in open channels and full and part-full conduits without causing obstruction or the need for weirs or flumes, and it offers full channel width measurement with up to eight velocity paths over one or two channels. The flowmeter’s smart transducer technology ensures accurate measurement to improve process control and reduce operational expenses. This system, along with the company’s complete line of flowmeters, will be displayed in booth H40 and J41 in Hall 10 at ACHEMA 2009 in Frankfurt, Germany, from May 11 – 15.

The Sarasota 200 is commonly used for flood prediction, sewage treatment and abstraction compliance applications, but now is ideal for leak detection applications using one or two flowmeters. Due to physical separation, it is more common to use two flowmeters in a master-slave configuration to compare upstream and downstream flow measurement within large diameter (500 mm and greater) pipes. If the differential flow measurement exceeds a pre-defined threshold, the master flowmeter triggers a series of alarms that culminate in the closure of the pipeline to help avoid high water conditions that may lead to flooding.

Like the Sarasota 200, the Thermo Scientific Sarasota 2000 open channel flowmeter is also engineered to calculate flow directly from the measurement of water velocity and depth, overcoming inherent limitations of traditional volumetric flow measurement which can be expensive and obstructive. Capable of providing measurement with up to 32 velocity paths, the Sarasota 2000 meets the demands of more challenging sites including sewage inlet monitoring, and provides reliable, simultaneous measurement on up to four separate channels for process optimization and capital expense reduction.

The Thermo Scientific SX40 flowmeter is also ideal for a number of applications, including sludge management in sewage treatment plants as well as slurry and effluent monitoring. It combines dedicated dual-frequency Doppler (DFD) technology with digital signal processing to make the flowmeter immune to higher levels of external noises than standard Doppler technology. The easy-to-install SX40 includes a 90,000 data point logger which helps increase productivity and negates costs associated with a chart recorder or external data logger.

Two Thermo Scientific transit time flowmeters will also be featured at ACHEMA–the TX10 and DCT7088. Both devices ensure leak free measurements and zero pressure drop, and offer access to an extensive range of diagnostic information that enables rapid determination of the quality and accuracy of the flow measurement.
