Thermo Fisher Scientific Expands its Industry-Leading Portfolio at PITTCON 2009

New Advances Increase Laboratory Efficiency While Dramatically Improving Analytical Performance

CHICAGO (March 9, 2009) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE: TMO), the world leader in serving science, is introducing new products and technologies at PITTCON 2009 that are designed to help customers in the laboratory and in the field to improve productivity by optimizing analyses, streamlining workflows and improving the quality of results. PITTCON, the world’s largest conference and exposition for laboratory science, is under way in Chicago from March 8 – 12.

At this year’s 60th PITTCON, Thermo Fisher Scientific will showcase innovative technologies that allow customers to do more with fewer resources in today’s challenging economy – for applications ranging from drug discovery to environmental and food safety testing. The company will showcase its industry-leading portfolio through its two premier brands, Thermo Scientific and Fisher Scientific, in adjacent booths 1432 and 1425. Along with new instrument, equipment and software solutions, attendees will see an expanded line of consumables and laboratory workstation products that support “green” initiatives in their laboratories.

“Our customers are facing a new set of productivity demands, yet they continue to require better analytical performance in both speed and sensitivity,” said Marc N. Casper, chief operating officer of Thermo Fisher Scientific. “We’re building on the breadth and depth of technologies we’ve developed as the world leader in serving science to deliver the innovative solutions our customers need to meet their goals, especially in today’s challenging environment.”

Among the new technologies, products and capabilities introduced at PITTCON 2009 are:

Mass Spectrometry

Customers looking to improve workflows in pharmaceutical, food, environmental and industrial laboratories can now dramatically simplify sample screening and quantitation using the company’s new benchtop liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system, the Thermo Scientific Exactive. The system is built on Thermo Fisher’s award-winning Orbitrap™ platform, and features full-scan, high-resolution, accurate mass capabilities while delivering simultaneous qualitative and quantitative results. While simple to operate, Exactive™ sets new standards for LC-MS performance at resolutions of up to 100,000. Its intuitive Pathfinder™ software employs pre-configured methods that allow non-specialists to operate the system in “walk-up” mode.

Also new to Pittcon are two triple quadrupole mass spectrometry systems. The high performance Thermo Scientific TSQ Vantage LC-MS/MS provides superior reproducibility and high precision at low levels of quantitation for consistent, high-throughput analysis of small molecules, biomolecules and peptides. It delivers up to 10 times more sensitivity than competing systems without an increase in noise, making it ideal for the most demanding quantitative analyses. To maximize the workflow capabilities of advanced LC-MS/MS technologies, the company is introducing Thermo Scientific Transcend, a sample-extraction system for the analysis of complex matrices on the mass spectrometer. The Transcend™ system reduces time spent on sample preparation, and increases detection limits. This advanced online sample extraction system, coupled with highly sensitive MS/MS on the TSQ Vantage™, provides an end-to-end workflow solution for analysis of drug and other organic molecules.

To streamline workflows in challenging multi-residue environmental and food safety testing applications, the Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum Access Max is an economical LC-MS/MS solution. When combined with the new Thermo Scientific TraceFinder software, point-and-click methods development can be completed in minutes instead of hours or days.

Molecular Spectroscopy

The innovative new Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 2000 series is a family of UV-Vis spectrophotometers that combines micro-volume capability and unmatched analysis speed for life sciences and clinical research laboratories. The patented sample retention system allows for measurements of samples as small as 0.5µL, and the added cuvette capability of the 2000c expands the types of samples that can be analyzed on one platform. The Nanodrop 2000™ series provides the broadest concentration range, with no dilutions, offered in a spectrophotometer. It retains the simplicity and robustness of its predecessor products in the same small footprint, but with major advances in performance.

For laboratories analyzing the molecular composition of raw materials, production processes and finished goods with Raman instruments, the company is announcing a new software offering, Thermo Scientific OMNIC Specta, which reduces analysis time when evaluating Raman spectral data. Previously available only on FT-IR instruments, the OMNIC™ Specta radically improves the quality and ease of gathering sample information and brings new efficiency to laboratories that must identify unknown components in mixtures of materials. This is a major innovation for Raman technology, designed to deliver improved productivity with dependable, clear and easy-to-understand results without challenging data preparation and interpretation.

Elemental Analysis

For customers in the industrial sector, the new Thermo Scientific TITAN 4000 is a nitrogen/sulfur/chlorine analyzer that offers customers in refinery and petrochemical markets superior sample introduction and performance in an instrument that is 60% smaller than existing analyzers. The unit’s innovative sample introduction devices enable increased analysis speed, as well as exceptional accuracy and reliability of results. The TITAN 4000™ can analyze a range of refinery and chemical samples, including naphtha, aromatics, automotive fuels, biodiesel fuels, and gaseous and liquefied petroleum.

The company has also expanded its leading portfolio of portable elemental analyzers for applications in the field with the new advanced Thermo Scientific NitonXL3t Series with GOLDD™ technology. A unique large-area drift detector allows testing for a wider array of elements with greater speed, sensitivity and specificity, thus eliminating the need for helium purges to save time and reduce complexity. The Niton® XL3t is the ideal multi-purpose tool for identifying metal alloys, conducting mining exploration, detecting soil contaminants, meeting Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) requirements or screening a range of consumer goods for prohibited elemental substances.

Electrochemistry

New offerings of Thermo Scientific water analysis products will be on display, including meters that provide increased efficiency and electrodes that deliver environmental benefits and reduced maintenance. The Orion DUAL STAR™ meter offers a range of uses and improved efficiency, allowing for two measurements simultaneously from one sample. The new AQUAfast® AQ3070 chlorine meter offers simple operation with multiple test options for free and total chlorine in drinking water and wastewater reporting. The ROSS® Ultra Triode offers optimum performance by delivering fast, accurate readings and measurement of pH and temperature with minimal maintenance. Finally, Orion Green pH electrodes are the first electrodes to meet all the requirements of RoHS regulations. The electrodes contain no lead, mercury or other hazardous substances, and provide precise pH measurements using environmentally friendly pH-sensing glass.

Informatics

Thermo Scientific Connects is a new program that leverages the company’s breadth of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) capabilities and expertise in enterprise system integration to radically streamline and simplify reporting between laboratory-generated data and enterprise-level information. Changes in the current environment, whether economic or regulatory, make it critical for companies to maximize the capabilities of their existing enterprise data systems and LIMS investments.
