Thermo Fisher Scientific Unveils New Spectrophotometer at PITTCON 2009 to Meet Challenges of Micro-Sample Quantitation

CHICAGO (March 9, 2009) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced the launch of the Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 2000c – the only UV-Vis spectrophotometer that offers combined micro-volume capability, unmatched speed and cuvette capability. The NanoDrop™ 2000c will be showcased at the Thermo Scientific booth 1432 at PITTCON 2009, being held March 8-12 in Chicago.

The NanoDrop 2000c reduces sample sizes to a new low with a requirement of only 0.5 µL for some samples. This patented sample retention system allows precious samples to be conserved, while the cuvette capability expands the types of samples that can be analyzed on one platform. This combination of measurement options allows the user to analyze micro-volumes as well as enjoy cuvette-based benefits such as greater sensitivity, analysis of cell cultures and measurement of volatile samples.

With both pedestal and cuvette capability, the NanoDrop 2000c provides the broadest concentration range ever offered by a spectrophotometer – from sensitivity as low as conventional spectrophotometers up to 15,000 ng/µL for dsDNA (with no dilutions). The NanoDrop 2000c is ideal for laboratories wishing to measure analytes with low wavelength absorbance (such as peptides at 205nm). In addition, laboratory efficiency, productivity and sustainability are improved with reduced use of solvents based on smaller sample sizes.

In addition to the efficiencies delivered by its functionality, the NanoDrop 2000c has a footprint smaller than a lab notebook, saving valuable laboratory bench space. The new software enables users to build custom methods, and offers unit selection, an oligo calculator and flexible options to report and export data. NanoDrop 2000c users have full access to complementary software updates available at www.nanodrop.com.

“As the industry leader in micro-sample quantitation, the NanoDrop 2000c represents our response to the needs of today’s laboratory scientists,” said Cathy Williams, marketing director, NanoDrop products, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “Our lab customers seek workflow efficiency, productivity and quality results while retaining the simplicity and robustness that users of the NanoDrop family of products have come to know.”

The easy-to-use NanoDrop 2000c was developed by the same group of micro-sample analysis experts that began shipping these instruments in 2001 and currently serves the largest installed base of micro-sample UV-Vis spectrophotometers in use worldwide to improve laboratory workflow. This innovative new instrument is backed by a team of life science professionals who help scientists with their application needs to ensure optimum instrument use.

Scientists who want to try the NanoDrop 2000c in their own laboratories with their own samples may do so as part of a free demonstration program offered by Thermo Fisher Scientific.
