A thermal cycler (also called thermocycler) is an instrument that employs precise temperature control and rapid temperature changes to conduct the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR is used to create billions of copies of a DNA sequence for use in a wide array of downstream procedures including cloning, sequencing, expression analysis, and genotyping.
