Real-time PCR

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the most commonly used nucleic acid amplification method in the world today.  Real-time PCR, also called quantitative PCR or qPCR, is one of the most powerful and sensitive gene analysis techniques available. It is used for a broad range of applications, including quantitative gene expression analysis, genotyping, SNP analysis, pathogen detection, drug target validation, and measuring the efficacy of RNA interference. As the name suggests, real-time PCR detects the products of nucleic acid amplification during the course of the reaction, and is generally considered to be more accurate than end-point PCR for determining initial target copy number.

As the exclusive licensor of real-time PCR and certain PCR-improvement patents, we provide our business partners with access to these technologies in a variety of ways.

For companies that wish to obtain rights to manufacture and sell enzymes, kits, and/or probes conveying label license rights to end users, we offer three worldwide licensing programs:

Real-time PCR is frequently combined with reverse transcription to quantify levels of viral RNA, messenger RNA, microRNA or other transcripts in solutions, cells, or tissues. SuperScript® III Reverse Transcriptase provides consistent, reliable cDNA synthesis and has been tested on a variety of real-time PCR instruments, allowing us to support the enzyme on virtually any instrument platform in the market today, guaranteeing reliable performance for you and your customers.

We hold an exclusive position regarding the use of uracil-N-glycosylase (UDG), also known as UNG nuclease, to remove PCR products, also known as amplicons, which may otherwise contaminate samples or equipment in high throughput labs. UTP is incorporated in the amplicon instead of TTP during PCR, and is digested away by the UDG enzyme at the end of the reaction, eliminating the possibility of carry-over. Rights to this intellectual property portfolio are available for use in your commercial services or to sell kits or master mixes, and we can also supply you with a high-quality grade of the enzyme, packaged in a unit size designed for direct inclusion in your kit or master mix, or for use in your test services.

Protein expression and purification is a core capability of our company, and we can frequently manufacture even very difficult enzymes at a scale and quality to meet the needs of our OEM clients.

Labeling & Detection Reagents

Expertise in fluorescent dye chemistry and oligonucleotide labeling has allowed us to develop powerful real-time PCR detection reagents.

SYBR® Green This nucleic acid stain, invented by our Molecular Probes® business, is the overwhelming favorite detection reagent for real time PCR. The dye is included in the reaction mixture and exhibits a large increase in fluorescence with each round of PCR product formation. Licenses to our SYBR® Green dye technology are available for use in combination with your kits or commercial services.  If you have a specialized application, or are interested in a different nucleic acid stain with different spectral properties or other performance characteristics, such as our SYTO® stains or SYBR® GreenER reagent, please contact us for more information about the ways in which we can meet your needs.

We also offer fluorescent nucleic acid stains for detecting end point PCR reactions, including PicoGreen® reagent, which can be used in combination with microplate readers and other devices; SYBR® Gold stain and other gel stains, which can be used In combination with gel electrophoresis; as well as a broad portfolio of nucleic stains with variable spectral properties, which can be used in combination with capillary electrophoresis, microfluidics, or other chip-based applications.

Sample Preparation

The first step in nucleic acid amplification is sample preparation. Whether you or your customers are isolating DNA or RNA from cultured cells, colonies, tissues, environmental samples, buccal scrapes, or clinical swabs, and whether it is free in solution or encapsulated in a virus or cell, we have the sample preparation reagents for you. Our portfolio includes a wide range of tools, including Dynabeads® magnetic particles, ChargeSwitch® resins, and MagMAX™ bead-based technology.  We also customize surfaces with our proprietary capture technologies and will work with you to optimize the use of our products in combination with your commercial services or kits. 


Through our acquisition of AcroMetrix, we've obtained an industry-leading position in standards and controls for use in combination with nucleic acid amplification-based molecular diagnostics tests. We additionally can provide standard internal controls, such as ROX and other dye labeled oligonucleotides, size ladders, calibration plates for thermal cyclers, and more.


From DNA ladders to precast gels and capillaries either containing fluorescent nucleic acid stains or unstained for large or small nucleic acids, we can provide you with an entire portfolio of tools for analyzing your PCR products by electrophoresis.  Electrophoresis is the platform of choice when size matters.


Since the introduction of our first thermal cycler in 1987, we have continuously developed and supported new PCR instruments.  Our long and successful history of designing and manufacturing a variety of instruments includes thermocyclers for end-point and real-time PCR.  We also provide sample preparation instruments and sequencers, including our next generation SOLiD™ System. Our capillary electrophoresis instruments permit automated multiplex read-out of samples where fragment length or repeat numbers are key components of result interpretation. Our SOLiD System is ideal for in-depth analysis of individual samples.
