This antibody recognizes an epitope within the N-terminal (extracellular) portion of CD235a (glycophorin A) and CD235b (glycophorin B). Its antigen is expressed on early erythroblasts, late erythroblasts, erythroblasts, mature erythrocytes and the cells of erythroid cell lines K562 and HEL, but not on all other cells.
CD235a (Glycophorins A, GPA) is a single pass membrane sialoglycoprotein expressed in mature erythrocytes and erythroid precursor cells. CD235a is the carrier of blood group M and N specificities. CD235a provides cells with a large mucin-like that may serve as a barrier to cell fusion, minimizing aggregation between red blood cells in the circulation. CD235a has been shown to act as a receptor for Sandei virus, parvovirus, and Hsa, an Streptococcus adhesin.
