The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is a member of the Ig superfamily, and is involved in mediating homophilic binding. A number of different isoforms of NCAM exist. The isoforms are differentially expressed depending upon tissue type, and stage of development. In addition to playing a role in cell-cell adhesion, NCAM is also involved in development, neurite outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory.
