Although pathogenic bacteria constitute only a small portion of bacterial species, infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria affect millions of people worldwide. Diarrheal diseases, many of which are bacterial, are the second leading cause of death worldwide, claiming an estimated 5 million people annually. Furthermore, an estimated 3 million people die of tuberculosis annually, 500,000 people die of pertussis, and 25,000 die of typhoid. The ability of bacteria to utilize various food sources is a major factor behind their pervasiveness. Their vast numbers lead to rapid evolutionary changes resulting in emerging diseases as well as antibiotic-resistant strains of well known diseases. Examples of these are multi-drug resistant tuberculosis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
