DUSP16 is a 665 amino acid novel mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase belonging to the non-receptor class of the protein-tyrosine phosphatase family with a rhodanese-like domain, protein tyrosine phosphatase catalytic domain and a long terminal stretch containing nuclear export and localization signal. DUSP16 are dual-specificity phosphatases that dephosphorylate the TXY motif of MAPK TXY motifs, thereby inactivating MAP kinases. DUSP16 is ubiquitously expressed and behaves both as a nuclear shuttle and as a phosphatase. It binds to and inactivates p38 MAPK and JNK/SAPK, p38 alpha and –beta but not gamma or delta and ERK.
