This antibody recognizes an extracellular antigen of HLA-B7 antigen. Although highly specific, it can cross-react with HLA-B42 antigen.
HLA-B7 is one of the polymorphic proteins of human MHC Class I found on all nucleated cells. This surface protein is a heterodimer consisting of the specific transmembrane HLA-B chain paired with Beta-2 microglobulin. Classical MHC Class I molecules play a central role in adaptive immunity by presenting to T cells antigenic peptides derived either from the cell itself (classical presentation) or extracellular antigens (cross-presentation). The ligands of MHC class I include T cell receptor (TCR) and a costimulatory molecule CD8. Hundreds of HLA-B alleles have been described. Typing for these polymorphisms is routinely done for transplantation.
HLA and MHC antibodies play a significant role in Immunopeptidomics, facilitating the identification and characterization of neoantigens through high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem Mass Spectrometry.
