The papillomavirus major capsid protein, L1, is a ~55 kD protein with the ability to spontaneously self-assemble into virus-like particles (VLPs). These VLPs present an exterior surface essentially indistinguishable from the native 60 nm non-enveloped papillomavirus virion. Purified recombinant L1 proteins can achieve this complex assembly reaction in the absence of any chaperones (Schiller and Lowy, 2012). PMID: 23800545.
