Insulin is a hormone secreted by islet cells of the pancreas. It functions to regulate of blood glucose homeostasis, and modulate lipid metabolism. Insulin is a cleavage product produced from proinsulin produced by beta cells. Proinsulin is cleaved into three peptides. The A and B-chains are covalently linked by disulphide bonds, and make up the insulin molecule.
