The causative agent of what is commonly called Legionnaire's Disease, Legionella pneumophila causes acute pneumonia. The disease can also present itself as an nonpneumonic, influenza-like illness called Pontiac Fever. Legionella is found in aquatic environments where it’s growth is supported by amoebae. In human infections Legionella acts as an intracellular parasite and multiplies in alveolar macrophages. The genus Legionella contains 39 recognized species. The immunological diversity of Legionella is due to the existence of a variety of serogroups. Legionella pneumophila has the most with a total of 14 serogroups.
