Matrix metallopeptidase 13 belongs to the matrix metalloproteinase peptidase M10A subfamily. The inactive polypeptide undergoes serine protease cleavage, resulting in an active form containing catalytic and hemopexin-like domains. MMP-13 is involved in the breakdown of the extracellular matrix during tissue remodeling, embryonic development, and reproduction. MMP-13 cleaves type II collagen more efficiently than types I and III.
