Neurog 3 protein contains one basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain. It is both necessary and sufficient to induce endocrine islet cell differentiation from embryonic pancreatic progenitors. Not only does it initiates endocrine cell differentiation, it also promotes islet cell maturation and maintains islet function. It is reported that Neurogenin 3 can redirect the differentiation of bipotential secretory progenitors to endocrine rather than goblet cell fate.
