Nitrated alpha Synuclein may be involved in the regulation of dopamine release and transport. It is a soluble protein which is primarily localized at the presynaptic regions of axons. It can form filamentous aggregates, which are the major non amyloid component of intracellular inclusions in many neurodegenerative synucleinopathies. Nitrated alpha Synuclein has been found to reduce neuronal responsiveness to several apoptotic stimuli which leads to a decreased caspase-3 activation.
