Pannexin 1 is a member of a new family of gap junction proteins. It is abundantly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) and is coexpressed with Pannexin 2 in various neuronal populations. Pannexin 1 can also form a mechanosensitive ion channel that is also ATP-permeable in the nonjunctional plasma membrane. It also plays a role as a Ca2+-leak channel to regulate Ca2+ homeostasis in the endoplasmic reticulum.
