Immunofluorescent staining of HeLa using PA5-19609, anti-UBE2I / UBC9 antibody. The cells were fixed with PFA (4%) for 10 minutes, permabilised with BSA(1%), normal goat serum (10%) and glycine (0.3 M) in 0.1% T-BST for 20 minutes and exposed to the primary antibody at a concentration of 1 ug/ml for 1 hour at room temp. The secondary antibody was a 448 fluorescence conjugated Goat anti-rabbit IgG (green) at a dilution of 1:1000. A WGA- 594 fluorescent conjugated stain was used to label plasma membranes (red) and the nuclei stain was DAPI (blue).

This antibody is predicted to react with chicken, Xenopus laevis and zebrafish based on sequence homology.
The modification of proteins with ubiquitin is an important cellular mechanism for targeting abnormal or short-lived proteins for degradation. Ubiquitination involves at least three classes of enzymes: ubiquitin-activating enzymes, or E1s, ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes, or E2s, and ubiquitin-protein ligases, or E3s. This gene encodes a member of the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family. Four alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene.
