Vigilin, also known as high density lipoprotein binding protein (HDLBP), is a 1268 amino acid containing cytoplasmic protein in close association with the endoplasmic reticulum with fourteen K homology (KH). A transport protein, widely expressed in most of tissues, appears to play a role in cell sterol metabolism. It specifically binds to HDL (high density lipoprotein) molecules and may function to protect cells from over-accumulation of cholesterol by removal of excess cellular cholesterol.
