What is the relationship between genetic design and synthetic biology?

Synthetic biology merges engineering and computational techniques with biological science, enabling researchers to design and construct new biological systems in a defined, precise way. Not only does the synthetic biology approach save time and resources, the increased precision and control over resulting systems allows a more advanced understanding of biology. It also provides a way to manipulate organisms for applications such as bioproduction of energy, food, and vaccines, environmental cleanup technologies, and more.

What are the advantages of synthetic biology for genetic design?

Synthetic approaches to genetic engineering save time and labor compared to traditional cloning methodologies and provide increased precision and accuracy in biological design. Also, the common pain points associated with protein expression—yield, solubility, and functionality—can now be addressed in a rational and systematic way.

What are the key differences between applying synthetic biology versus traditional cloning?
