As the US’s largest shipper of dry ice with FedEx and given the poor recyclability of expanded polystyrene (EPS) coolers, energy intensity of refrigerants like dry ice and gel packs, and packaging weight, cold shipping of our products represents our largest environmental impact and opportunity. The implications go beyond our own impact; our packaging creates waste that leaves our customers with disposal issues. While our customers value the quality of what we deliver, feedback from around the world continues to indicate that our packaging practices must change, so our packaging does not become our customers’ waste. We're developing and delivering innovative packaging solutions to address this and other challenges.

We believe it is our responsibility to provide our customers with sustainable packaging options:

  • Consolidating shipments

Optimizing Dry Ice

Making dry ice requires a large amount of energy and involves taking CO2 from the air, which then sublimates back. From that perspective, dry ice has a significant negative environmental impact. Since it is relatively heavy, dry ice also has a higher negative impact on freight emissions. Reducing our dry ice use is smart for our business and good for the environment. By standardizing our cooler packing procedures and validating performance, we are making the effort to use only the dry ice we need. Read More


Going Ambient to Cut Waste and CO2

Our “Go Ambient” program converts products from cold to ambient shipping. We recently converted 3 more product lines--including top-selling capillary electrophoresis and transfection reagents--from cold to ambient shipping. Stability testing proves certain products can safely withstand ambient transport conditions, like transporting ice cream from the supermarket to your home freezer– no cooler or dry ice required. Each year we now ship 281,000 fewer EPS coolers and use 2,400 fewer metric tons of refrigerant, reducing waste for customers, and cutting carbon emissions. Read More

Hunting for Air and Right-Sizing

Hunting for air and “right-sizing” packaging removes unnecessary space, resulting in smaller shipping boxes and less refrigerant use. We introduced 25 new boxes used in more than 100,000 product kits sold annually. For instance, our European Distribution Center and Warrington, UK facilities took the opportunity to further shrink the ambient shipping carton they used, redesigning the carton to have the lowest possible dimensional weight qualified for shipping.
