Pathogen Detection Research by Real-Time PCR

Your trusted partner in pathogen detection solutions

When it comes to pathogen detection, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is the most established and successfully implemented molecular technique to date. It can detect slow-growing, difficult-to-cultivate microorganisms, and can be used when traditional microbiological techniques are inadequate, ambiguous, time-consuming, difficult, and costly.

As a leader in real-time PCR, Thermo Fisher Scientific offers a complete solution for pathogen detection—from real-time PCR systems to master mixes and TaqMan Assays, along with services and support to help you validate your pathogen detection workflow. The choice is yours, whatever your needs.

Molecular biological methods for the detection and characterization of microorganisms have revolutionized investigative microbiology and are now part of routine specimen processing. PCR techniques have led the way into this new era by allowing rapid detection of microorganisms that were previously difficult or impossible to detect by traditional microbiological methods. In addition to detection of fastidious microorganisms, more rapid detection by molecular methods is now possible for pathogens of public health importance. Molecular methods have now progressed beyond identification to detect antimicrobial resistance genes and provide public health information such as strain characterization by genotyping. Understanding of certain microorganisms has been improved by viral resistance detection and viral load testing for the monitoring of responses to antiviral exposure. With the advent of multiplex PCR, real-time PCR, and improvements in efficiency through automation, the costs of molecular methods are decreasing such that the role and use of molecular methods will further increase.

Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) can detect slow-growing, difficult-to-cultivate, or uncultivatable microorganisms, and can be used when traditional microbiological techniques are inadequate, ambiguous, time-consuming, difficult, and costly.

Inherent technical limitations of PCR are present, but they are reduced in laboratories that use standardized protocols, conduct rigid validation protocols, and adhere to appropriate quality-control procedures. Improvements in PCR, especially probe-based real-time PCR, have broadened its molecular detection capabilities in pathogen detection to complement and even surpass traditional methods in some situations.

Thermo Fisher Scientific's response to Zika virus

In May 2015, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert regarding the first confirmed Zika virus infection in Brazil, and on February 1, 2016, the World Health Organization declared Zika virus a public health emergency of international concern. In response, Thermo Fisher Scientific worked diligently to develop a lyophilized one-step real-time PCR multiplex TaqMan Assay for molecular detection of RNA from the dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses.
