For ion chromatographers, mass spectrometry enhances analyses with higher selectivity and, as a consequence, higher sensitivity and chromatographic peak confirmation. My last blog covered an example about resolving co-eluting peaks in an animal feed sample.
I want to share with you another example using a ground water sample analyzed with ion chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Four low-mass, inorganic cations are separated in six minutes. Since these cations have low mass-to-charge (m/z) ratios, they are particularly challenging to analyze. However, the ISQ EC single quadrupole MS excels at detecting low mass ions with a mass range of m/z 10-1250.
