It is a positive process step to stop life-threatening disease outbreaks such as cholera and other waterborne diseases which have devastating effects and are completely preventable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13408 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/analyteguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/image-1-051221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/analyteguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/image-1-051221.jpg 500w, https:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/analyteguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/image-1-051221-300x155.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>However, the disinfection process isn\u2019t without chemical side effects.<\/p>\n<p>As drinking water comes from sources such as streams, reservoirs and dams, often there are naturally occurring organic materials (NOM) that come from plants and animals in the water.<\/p>\n<p>Even after filtration, traces of NOM can still exist in the water source. When disinfection occurs, usually by a chlorinated method, the disinfectants will react with that material and form disinfection byproducts (DBPs).<\/p>\n<p>Depending on which disinfectant is used, the typical ones being free chlorine, chloramines, chlorine dioxide, and ozone, will determine which disinfection by-products are produced.<\/p>\n<p>Chlorine-based disinfectants will generally lead to the formation of haloacetic acids (HAAs), where acetic acids have one or more hydrogens replaced with a halogen.<br \/>\n<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13405 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/analyteguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/Image-2-0412B.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"999\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/analyteguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/Image-2-0412B.png 999w, https:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/analyteguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/Image-2-0412B-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/analyteguru\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2021\/12\/Image-2-0412B-768x318.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 999px) 100vw, 999px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are over 600 known disinfection byproducts and HAAs are the most abundant. Studies show concern over potential health implications such as the increased risk of cancer, problems in the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. So, it is hugely important to monitor and regulate the levels of these compounds in our drinking water as well as in swimming pools, which are highly chlorinated environments.<\/p>\n<p>There are 5 haloacetic acids with the most concern, known as the HAA 5, which are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Monochloroacetic acid (MCAA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Dichloroacetic acid (DCAA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Trichloroacetic acid (TCAA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Monobromateic acid (MBAA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Dibromoacetic acid (DBAA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, there are monitoring programs on other HAAs such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/dwucmr\/fourth-unregulated-contaminant-monitoring-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">EPA fourth unregulated contaminant monitoring rule (UCMR4)<\/a>, which asks for monitoring of 4 further HAAs, listed below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Bromochloroacetic acid (BCAA),<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Bromodichloroacetic acid (BDCAA),<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Dibromochloroacetic acid (DBCAA),<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Tribromoacetic acid (TBAA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Collectively these compounds are known as the HAA9. How many HAAs are monitored and regulated and the maximum concentration limits vary from country to country. Please click<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/uk\/en\/home\/industrial\/environmental\/environmental-learning-center\/contaminant-analysis-information\/anion-analysis\/disinfection-byproducts-analysis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> here<\/a> for a summary of current regulations.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"toc-hId--1902364152\"><strong>European regulations reviewed<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the EU, HAAs were monitored but not regulated and the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32020L2184&amp;from=EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">EU drinking water directive<\/a> was over 20 years old. Thus, a review was carried out in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The review highlighted the need for HAAs, among others, to be included in the regulated compounds list.<\/p>\n<p>There is also increased pressure to make water quality more consistent across the EU, thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.right2water.eu\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Right 2 Water campaign<\/a> powered by European citizens to highlight that not everyone has access to safe water and sanitation plus the need to reduce bottled water consumption to help with the plastic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>To quote the directive, <em>\u201cBy 12 January 2026, EU Member States shall take the measures necessary to ensure that water intended for human consumption complies with the parametric values set out in Part B of Annex I for Bisphenol A, Chlorate, Chlorite, Haloacetic Acids, Microcystin-LR, PFAS Total, Sum of PFAS and Uranium.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The HAA 5 will be regulated at 60 ug\/L &#8211; another positive step in maintaining safety standards in our precious drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>As investigative work is ongoing into the new sets of iodo- disinfection
