{"id":398,"date":"2019-09-27T16:06:58","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T16:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/2019\/09\/27\/celebrating-one-year-of-accelerating-microscopy\/"},"modified":"2019-09-27T16:06:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T16:06:58","slug":"celebrating-one-year-of-accelerating-microscopy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/blog\/atomic-resolution\/celebrating-one-year-of-accelerating-microscopy\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating One Year of Accelerating Microscopy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just over a year ago, we launched our Accelerating Microscopy blog as a way to explore and uncover the field of microscopy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/04\/celebrating20accelerating20microscopy.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"946\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Through interviews with scientists, like <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/jap5s7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paolo Swuec of University of Milan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/wu1s9z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dennis and Marina Manuel of Houston Electron Microscopy<\/a>, we were able to hear directly from the researchers about how they&rsquo;re using electron microscopy to accelerate science.<\/p>\n<p><span>We dove into the state of today&rsquo;s deadliest viruses and diseases to examine how cryo-EM is being used to help advance research around <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/kabcln\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">breast cancer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/dcpg3g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alzheimer&rsquo;s<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/53k3az\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Parkinson&rsquo;s<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/uy62sn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ebola<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/5mri0b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zika<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/63lybz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">malaria<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/ie9yfq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">influenza<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/0rzole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HIV<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/bj3st9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prion disease<\/a>.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><div style=\"width: 770px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/04\/ebola-virus-2-2.jpg\" width=\"760\" height=\"335\" title=\"Structure of the HMPV N0-P complex, imaged using cryo-EM  Source: 10.7554\/eLife.12627\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Structure of the HMPV N0-P complex, imaged using cryo-EM  Source: 10.7554\/eLife.12627<\/p><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>In addition, we showcased how schools across the United States, from high schools to universities, are using microscopy to expand scientific exploration. <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/uikm6z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMSA<\/a>, a charter school in Marlborough, Massachusetts, became the first public institution in the state to house its own SEM. <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/j4m6tu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UC San Diego<\/a> is working to build batteries of the future. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/kac1ps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Oregon<\/a> welcomed the first Helios Hydra in North America.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><div style=\"width: 770px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/04\/around-the-o.jpg\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" title=\"University of Oregon installs the first Helios Hydra DualBeam Source: University of Oregon\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">University of Oregon installs the first Helios Hydra DualBeam Source: University of Oregon<\/p><\/div><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lastly, we introduced a number of new initiatives that can help researchers around the globe enhance their knowledge and research. <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/bcjo1t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cryo-EM University<\/a>, part of EM-learning.com, is a first-of-its-kind online training program designed to help researchers of all levels become proficient in cryo-EM.
