This technology has already led to stunning breakthroughs in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) research.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color:white;font-size:50%\">Latest advances in atomic resolution cryo electron microscopy<\/h2>\n<p>Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thermofisher.com\/us\/en\/home\/electron-microscopy\/products\/accessories-em\/selectris.html\">Selectris X Imaging Filter<\/a> in combination with a Krios Cryo-Transmission Electron Microscope, my colleagues collaborated with researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk\/\">Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology<\/a> in Cambridge, UK to <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2020-10-scientists-resolution-visualize-individual-atoms.html\">obtain<\/a> a 1.2 \u00e5ngstr\u00f6m resolution structure of the iron-storing protein apoferritin. They also achieved a 1.7 \u00e5ngstr\u00f6m resolution of the GABA Type A receptor-associated protein, with an even sharper resolution in key parts of the protein. These record-breaking resolution results, which were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-020-02924-y\">published in Nature on Oct. 21,<\/a> are just one example of the breakthrough discoveries speeding the path to disease understanding and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>As cryo-EM research breaks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2020\/10\/cryo-electron-microscopy-breaks-atomic-resolution-barrier-last\">the atomic resolution barrier<\/a> and launches a second resolution revolution, biologists are achieving a wide range of critical breakthroughs. New levels of automation in recent technologies facilitate sample preparation and lamella creation, making it easier to see proteins close to their native state.
