With the year coming to a close, it\u2019s exciting to see our customers recognized for their cutting-edge research.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to those who were recently honored for their work:<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size:100%\"><em>EMBO winners<\/em><\/h2>\n<p> Four of our customers were among 30 life scientists selected as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embo.org\/news\/press-releases\/2020\/embo-welcomes-thirty-young-investigators.html?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_campaign=press_release\">EMBO Young Investigators<\/a>, an honor that recognizes talented young scientists who have been group leaders for less than four years and have an excellent track record of scientific achievements. The 2020 award went to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.path.ox.ac.uk\/content\/tanmay-bharat\">Tanmay Bharat<\/a>, University of Oxford: Structural cell biology of bacterial biofilm formation;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cellarchlab.com\/\">Benjamin D. Engel<\/a>, Heimholz Zentrum Munich: Interplay between organelle form and function (watch <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/p9tv0h\">his webinar<\/a> with us);<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biozentrum.unibas.ch\/research\/researchgroups\/overview\/unit\/perez\/research-group-camilo-perez\/\">Camilo Perez<\/a>, Biozentrum, University of Basel: Molecular mechanism of cell wall membrane proteins; and<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpr.ku.dk\/staff\/?pure=en\/persons\/605665\">Nicholas M. I. Taylor<\/a>, University of Copenhagen: Mechanism and regulation of transport across the membrane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"font-size:100%\"><em>Forbes 30 Under 30<\/em><\/h2>\n<p> <a href=\"http:\/\/twomey.med.jhmi.edu\/\">Edward Twomey<\/a>, an assistant professor biophysics and biophysical chemistry at Johns Hopkins University, was named a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/30-under-30\/2020\">Forbes 30 Under 30<\/a>\u201d in the field of science. Twomey&#8217;s lab uses cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to research the impact of neurotransmitters on the way humans learn and process memories. Twomey and his team pioneered the discovery that glutamate proteins develop functional units in the brain and that defects in those structures can contribute to neurodegenerative diseases.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size:100%\"><em>Golden Goose Award<\/em><\/h2>\n<p> Two customers were awarded the prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldengooseaward.org\/\">Golden Goose Award<\/a>, a U.S. award established to recognize scientists whose federally-funded research has led to innovations or inventions that have a significant impact on humanity or society.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mclellanlab.org\/lab-members\">Jason McLellan<\/a>, a structural virologist at the University of Texas at Austin, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mclellanlab.org\/lab-members\">Daniel Wrapp<\/a>, a doctoral student in McLellan\u2019s lab, won the award for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldengooseaward.org\/01awardees\/winter\">research developing effective treatments for COVID-19<\/a>. Using cryo-EM, the two researchers linked a small antibody called a \u201cnanobody\u201d produced by llamas to a human antibody to create a new antibody that inhibits SARS CoV-2 from infecting human cells.
