Our cryo-EM instruments, including the Krios Cryo-TEM, have been used for breakthrough coronavirus research findings, such as <a title=\"Read more about the research\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-19619-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one recently published<\/a> by a team of researchers at Heidelberg University.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 100%\"><strong>Coronavirus Research Fueled by Powerful Imaging<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 2020, this team quickly set out to understand how the virus changes infected cells to achieve effective reproduction and made significant headway by characterizing the replication of SARS-CoV-2 inside host cells.<\/p>\n<p>Using <a title=\"Learn more about cryo electron tomography\" href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/xmqaqj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cryo electron tomography<\/a> (cryo-ET), a cryo-electron microscopy technique that provides three-dimensional images of molecular structures at nanometer resolution, the researchers revealed how SARS-CoV-2 changes the cellular membranes and organelles of infected cells, which is critical for effective replication.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1676\" title=\"SARS-CoV-2 virus particles rendered during coronavirus research\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/04\/Heidelberg-inline.jpg\" alt=\"SARS-CoV-2 virus particles rendered during coronavirus research\" width=\"400\" height=\"492\" \/><\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Combining cryo-electron tomography with Thermo Scientific Amira Software, a team of Heidelberg University researchers was able to render the three-dimensional environment of the cell and visualize individual SARS-CoV-2 virus particles and details of the viral assembly sites. (Photo of coronavirus research results courtesy of Heidelberg University)<\/em><\/div>\n<p>The researchers performed molecular analyses of the viral RNA and individual steps of virus replication to obtain unprecedented detail of the network composed of double-stranded RNA inside the double-membrane vesicles.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 100%\"><strong>Cryo-Electron Tomography of Infected Cells<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Using in-situ cryo-ET to image 200-nanometer thin layers of virus-infected cells, the researchers discovered how the viral RNA creates the necessary factors for its replication, allowing it to quickly reproduce and possibly even protect itself against immune system attacks. Using our Thermo Scientific <a title=\"Learn more about our Krios cryo-TEM\" href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/qzataa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Krios Cryo-TEM<\/a> and <a title=\"Learn more about our Aquilos Cryo-FIB\" href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/cnicyy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aquilos Cryo-FIB<\/a> in combination with <a title=\"Learn more about our Amira Software\" href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/v1t6ak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thermo Scientific Amira Software<\/a>, they rendered the three-dimensional environment of the cell\u2014while visualizing individual virus particles and details of the virus assembly sites.<\/p>\n<p>These discoveries built on the team\u2019s previous experience studying viral infections such as Influenza A and Ebola. \u201cThanks to our expertise in cryo-electron tomography, the excellent microscopes at the campus of Heidelberg University, and the highly collaborative environment at the Center for Integrative Infectious Disease Research, we were able to start detailed molecular examinations on SARS-CoV-2 infected cells right at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic,\u201d <a title=\"Read the article\" href=\"https:\/\/analyticalscience.wiley.com\/do\/10.1002\/was.00020233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Heidelberg University Hospital researcher Dr. Petr Chlanda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers\u2019 next step with their coronavirus research is to uncover which proteins are involved in the formation of the double membrane structures.
