Thanks in part to increased cryo-EM access, the total number of solved structures added to this single worldwide archive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwpdb.org\/stats\/deposition\">grew fivefold over the past two decades<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In that time, the number of structures added via electron microscopy\u00a0alone\u00a0grew\u00a0by nearly 17,000%.\u00a0In 2020, 2,390 structures solved using cryo-EM were added to the archive\u2014a 65%\u00a0jump over the previous year\u00a0and\u00a015% of all structures submitted\u00a0that year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/features\/2020\/03\/democratizing-cryo-em-broadening-access-expanding-field?_lrsc=88e80889-5330-493f-a9d9-f0419e15b904&amp;cid=LinkedInElevate&amp;utm_source=elevate-linkedin&amp;utm_medium=elevate&amp;src=linkedin-elevate\">Cryo-EM ushered\u00a0in a new era<\/a>\u00a0of structural biology with its ability to view molecules in their near-native state at atomic-level resolution. The method\u00a0became\u00a0the second most widely used technique for solving structures added to the Protein Data Bank,\u00a0surpassing\u00a0nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)\u00a0in\u00a02017.<\/p>\n<p>Cryo-EM\u00a0also\u00a0gained\u00a0ground on\u00a0the No. 1 method to-date\u2014X-ray crystallography\u2014which\u00a0faces limits in its\u00a0ability\u00a0to\u00a0crystallize\u00a0macromolecules of large size and poor\u00a0stability.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 100%\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cryo-EM access\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through innovative instrumentation<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As cryo-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">EM continues its ascent,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s important to callout the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cutting-edge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0equipment that made it pos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sible.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to their speed, accuracy, and high-resolution results, our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/7d1fw4\">Thermo Scientific\u00a0Glacios\u00a0Cryo-TEM<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/vdz7bv\">\u00a0Krios\u00a0Cryo-TEM<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/c9ghmc\">Talos Arctica Cryo-TEM<\/a>\u00a0contribute to the\u00a0structures solved\u00a0using\u00a0cryo-EM\u00a0and\u00a0lead\u00a0to important discoveries that increase\u00a0our\u00a0understanding of\u00a0a wide range of diseases from\u00a0HIV\u00a0to cancer to neurodegenerative diseases\u00a0like Alzheimer\u2019s or Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1782\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1782\" class=\"wp-image-1782\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/04\/PDB_Graphic_8_2020_6VSB_1200x627-1024x535.png\" alt=\"Captured with a Krios Cryo-TEM\" width=\"500\" height=\"261\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is the first cryo-EM structure of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcsb.org\/structure\/6VSB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SARS-CoV-2 spike protein<\/a>. Whether it be new diseases and viruses or a changing environment that puts new strains on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">agricultural\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">crops,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">far more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scientists<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">many<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">research areas\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">need access to<\/span><span cryo-EM to non-expert users\u2014helping them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">easily navigate what was once a complex workflow<\/span><span
