The continued advancement of this work led Dr. Stephan Handschuh to a strong interest in 3D visualization and analysis of animal tissue images.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fQcP0ve9htE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;start=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 100%\"><strong>3D visualization and analysis at University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A biologist at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Handschuh works in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vetmeduni.ac.at\/vetcore\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VetCore Facility for Research Imaging Unit<\/a> where he supports researchers with their projects.<\/p>\n<p>Austria\u2019s only university for veterinary medicine, the University of Veterinary Medicine accommodates both an animal hospital and several research institutes. Researchers who use the VetCore Facility explore diverse fields ranging from animal physiology to cancer biology to veterinarian surgery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2015\" title=\"Animal skeleton characterized with 3D visualization and analysis software\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/04\/Untitled-design-19-300x158.png\" alt=\"Animal skeleton characterized with 3D visualization and analysis software\" width=\"500\" height=\"263\" \/>To accommodate this work, Handschuh helps researchers capture animal tissue images using a wide range of imaging techniques. He then often uses <a href=\"https:\/\/ter.li\/7zokp6\">Thermo Scientific Amira Software<\/a> to help researchers investigate all of their image data via 3D visualization and analysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmira includes virtually any function one could imagine when it comes to high-end image processing, segmentation, and visualization analysis,\u201d says Handschuh. \u201cThis immensely broad functionality makes it quite unique.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 100%\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2020 alignright\" title=\"3D visualization and analysis of a reptile skeleton\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/04\/VetCore-3-1024x481.png\" alt=\"3D visualization and analysis of a reptile skeleton\" width=\"500\" height=\"235\" \/><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With Amira Software, those at the VetCore Facility can analyze the size and shape of organs, tissues, and cells. \u201cWe can visualize complex details of microscopic tissue anatomy, and we can put together data from different imaging modalities such as clinical CTs and MRIs and microCT, light microscopy, and electron microscopy\u2014which deepens our understanding of biological structures,\u201d says Handschuh.<\/p>\n<p>His team uses hundreds of Amira Software features.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes image segmentation, image co-registration of different data sets, advanced processing, image filtering, quantitative analysis, and of course all different kinds of visualization tools,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 100%\"><strong>A solution for complex cell biology imaging workflows<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Since he started working at the university in 2012, Handschuh trained more than 100 students and post-doctorate researchers on how to use Amira Software.<\/p>\n<p>He finds the ease at which his trainees have adopted the software fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith just a couple hours of training, people who have never worked with this software really start to do this work on their own, and carry out quite complex tasks,\u201d said Handschuh.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2016\" title=\"Dr. Stephan Handschuch\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/atomic-resolution\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2022\/04\/Handschuch-1-1-1024x513.png\" alt=\"Dr. Stephan Handschuch\" width=\"760\" height=\"381\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The software has been instrumental in analyzing skeletal development in mouse embryos, it\u2019s been used to quantify movements in skull joints of miniaturized lizards, and it\u2019s helped to identify approaches to brain surgery in cats and dogs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis functionality makes it possible to carry out complex workflows on a single software platform,\u201d says Handschuh. \u201cFor us as facility staff supporting users, this brings clear advantages because users do not need to change between platforms during their analysis.
