Recent outbreaks, such as the Ebola outbreak in 2015 and the most recent Zika outbreak, have created havoc around the world, pushing scientists to truly understand the pathogenesis of these organisms. As science dissects the biology of these organisms, we get more insight into the true relationship between the virus and the associated consequences. Scientists around the world are also scouring to find potential ways or to stop the virus from replicating within human cells. Even today, a year later, Zika continues to spread across continents and countries and is a major concern. The thing that truly sets the Zika virus apart from deadlier outbreaks, like the Ebola virus, is that it targets the most innocent and indefensible of humans; newborns.
In the latest video from Thermo Fisher Scientific, we take you to Brazil to understand how scientists toil day and night to find answers around the Zika virus. Professor Renato Santana de Aguiar and Professor Rodrigo de Moraes Brindeiro of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) share their research. While it’s important for researchers to ask scientific questions that trouble our world, it is equally important to develop the most robust and innovative of technology that can help researchers in any part of the world get to their answers. Dr. Jonathan Wang is one such scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific, who shares his story behind the development of the Zika research Assay.
