However, the biobanking community often fades into obscurity because it does not receive the same recognition. Biobankers do not have a system that allows them to identify and trace their samples in scientific literature. Therefore, they cannot readily measure their impact.\u00a0Napolitani et al. (2016) report on the first\u00a0standard for citing bioresources, including biobanks, within journal articles.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2011, within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gen2phen.org\/groups\/brif-bio-resource-impact-factor\" target=\"_blank\">Bioresource Research\u00a0Impact Factor (BRIF) initiative<\/a>, a BRIF and journal editors subgroup formed, with the goal of\u00a0assessing the value and impact and promoting the sharing of bioresources. In 2013, as a result of discussions on open data sharing and the role of a new journal (the <em>Open Journal of Bioresources<\/em>, which will feature \u201cmarker papers\u201d describing bioresources), the subgroup agreed on a standardized citation format.\u00a0Using marker papers is already highly successful in\u00a0other areas, such as bioinformatics, and creates a standard\u00a0to allow traceability of bioresources. The standardized citation format became <span class=\"thread\">Citation of BioResources in journal Articles (CoBRA)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>CoBRA defines sections of a journal article where the\u00a0name and\u00a0accurate details of a given bioresource\/biobank are defined, and introduces a method for\u00a0referencing the bioresource in a systematic way that will improve\u00a0traceability of its use. Each individual bioresource used to perform a\u00a0study should be mentioned in the material and methods\u00a0section of a journal article, and should be cited as an individual reference. The following is an example for the\u00a0Italian biobank BioBanca Istituzionale (BBI), a partner in the Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure\u2013European Research Infrastructure Consortium (BBMRI-ERIC) network:<\/p>\n<p>BioBanca Istituzionale (BBI). [BIORESOURCE]<\/p>\n<p>Napolitani et al. report that using the CoBRA guidelines enables\u00a0bibliographic databases such as\u00a0Web of Science,\u00a0which calculates impact factor for the Journal Citation\u00a0Reports, to\u00a0retrieve information needed for statistical analysis by biobankers. This in turn allows biobank activity to be tracked and valued. They suggest that CoBRA\u2019s proposed citation system will increase biobank visibility and\u00a0promote bioresource sharing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reference<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Napolitani, F., et al.
