Another day at the BIO International Convention 2026<\/a> reinforced a theme that continues to surface across conversations, presentations, and partnering meetings: bringing therapies to patients faster increasingly depends on strong partnerships and collaboration across the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the exhibit hall to media interviews and one-on-one discussions, the importance of collaboration was emphasized: not only between biotech and pharma companies, but also among development, manufacturing, technology, and investment partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spoke with Anil Kane, Senior Director, Global Technical Scientific Affairs, at Thermo Fisher Scientific<\/a> on his take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shift toward end-to-end development partnerships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One trend that stood out from a CDMO perspective is the growing demand for integrated development and manufacturing support across the entire drug development journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than seeking support for a single stage of development, many companies are looking for partners that can help move a molecule from early development through clinical trials, regulatory submission, and commercialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This demand spans a wide range of modalities, including biologics, mRNA therapies, proteins, peptides, and monoclonal antibodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is clear: improve efficiency, reduce costs, and eliminate friction between development stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For emerging biotechs, particularly those developing innovative molecules in China and other parts of Asia, the focus is increasingly on finding global partners with proven experience bringing therapies through development and regulatory approval. These companies are seeking support to build robust chemistry, manufacturing, and controls (CMC) packages that include drug substance, drug product, and licensing-ready data packages capable of supporting global expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, larger pharmaceutical companies continue to evaluate promising assets through licensing and partnership opportunities, placing greater emphasis on development readiness, risk assessment, and long-term commercial viability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also during my conversation with Kane, he reflected on themes that emerged in a recent panel discussion at the bioSeedin Innovation Partnering Summit<\/a>. He emphasized that while strong science and clinical data remain essential, successful partnerships increasingly depend on robust CMC strategies, thoughtful risk assessment, and long-term alignment between organizations. As companies seek to bring promising molecules to global markets, Kane highlighted the important role CDMOs can play in helping biotechs build commercialization-ready development programs and navigate the path from innovation to patients. De-risking innovation through experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As outsourcing continues to play a major role in drug development, CDMOs are becoming increasingly involved in strategic decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many discussions at BIO focused on the importance of evaluating a molecule beyond its scientific promise. Questions around manufacturing readiness, scalability, regulatory strategy, and potential development risks are becoming central to partnership conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ability to identify gaps early, perform thorough due diligence, and build development plans that reduce risk at every stage can significantly influence a program’s path to commercialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Kane noted, strategy is not only about determining what to do\u2014it is also about understanding what not to do<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That mindset of proactive risk management continues to shape how companies evaluate assets and development pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global innovation continues to expand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

BIO 2026 also highlighted the increasingly global nature of biotechnology innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several attendees noted the growing presence of international companies and regional pavilions throughout the conference. The strong representation from Asia, Europe, and emerging biotech hubs reflects the continued globalization of drug discovery and development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many innovative molecules are now originating outside traditional biotech centers, creating new opportunities for collaboration across regions and markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, companies continue to view the United States as a critical market due to its size, commercial potential, and regulatory influence. As organizations pursue clinical development and commercialization strategies, many are seeking partners that can help navigate regulatory requirements and prepare therapies for broader global adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI moves from concept to capability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Artificial intelligence remained a prominent topic throughout BIO 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While many attendees agreed the industry is still in the early stages of adoption, discussions increasingly focused on practical applications rather than theoretical possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversations centered on opportunities to improve speed and efficiency across the drug development lifecycle, from research and development through manufacturing and quality operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examples included AI-powered knowledge management systems, digital subject matter expert tools, advanced analytics, and quality management applications designed to reduce turnaround times and improve decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organizations are also exploring how AI can help optimize development processes, identify risks earlier, and support increasingly complex manufacturing operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the full impact of AI is still unfolding, there is growing consensus that its influence will continue expanding across the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Funding, partnerships, and the road ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond scientific innovation, BIO continues to serve as a meeting place for companies, investors, and strategic partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partnering discussions were visible throughout the conference as biotech companies sought opportunities to advance promising assets through collaborations, licensing agreements, joint ventures, and co-development partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venture capital firms and investment groups were equally active, evaluating technologies and organizations that could represent the next generation of breakthrough therapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of these conversations focused on disease areas with significant unmet need, including oncology, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, metabolic conditions, obesity, and diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The enthusiasm throughout the conference reflected a shared belief that collaboration will play an increasingly important role in bringing these therapies to patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most encouraging observations from BIO 2026 has been the energy across the global biotechnology community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From emerging biotechs and established pharmaceutical companies to investors, manufacturers, and technology providers, the common goal remains the same: accelerating innovation while reducing risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
