Explore our on-demand webinar:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/event.thermoscientific.com\/LP=1775\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Surface Selection: Achieving Optimal Growth and Harvesting Of Your Cells, in the Cell Culture Caf&eacute;.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Four types of surfaces<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you&rsquo;re setting up your culture, you&rsquo;ll need to answer these key questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Will the culture require a hydrophobic or hydrophilic surface?<\/li>\n<li><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Will it benefit from additional coating?<\/li>\n<li><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>What harvesting method will you employ?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your answers will guide you to choosing the right cultureware surface. Consider these basics on four surface types when making your selection:<\/p>\n<p><a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/admin.acceleratingscience.com\/cellculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2015\/05\/tfs_1002_thmbnls-surfaces.jpg\" alt=\"cultureware_collagen_coating_cell_sheet_cell_signaling_raman_spectroscopy_nunc_vitro_tissue_engineering\" title=\"The_Right_Surface_Matters_In_Your_Research\" width=\"165\" height=\"165\" style=\"float: right;margin: 2px\" \/><\/a><strong>Surface energy treated<\/strong>: This process delivers electronic energy into a cloud of gas, creating energetic oxidation. Depending on which kind of energy treatment is applied to the surface&mdash;corona or plasma&mdash;your cultureware&rsquo;s surface will be ideal for different types of cells. A hydrophilic plasma treatment is ideal for stem cells, including embryonic stem cells.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extracellular matrix coating (ECM)<\/strong>: Select this surface, which works through passive absorption, when working with neurons, which will not adhere to an energy-treated coating. The ECM coating helps with the binding of tricky cells by replicating the action of basal lamina substrates on culture surfaces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polymer graft<\/strong>: Covalent binding keeps the polymers attached to the polystyrene surface, which allows greater control over the adherence and release of cells; molecules won&rsquo;t come off during cell culture or harvesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Untreated polystyrene<\/strong>: This is a good choice if you need to create a nonadherent environment at a low cost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More on selecting surfaces<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are numerous variables in finding the best surface choice.
