As Dr. Richard Zane of UCHealth puts it, “Healthcare is a team sport,” and Thermo Fisher Scientific is playing its part. UCHealth’s (clinical) testing laboratory processes over 3,000 COVID-19 tests daily, having risen to the challenge of current times to deliver the results people need to isolate safely, inform treatment, and protect frontline healthcare personnel. This video highlights UCHealth’s response to the current crisis.
Laboratory technicians, management and pathologists are integral to the fight against the pandemic. They work day and night at UCHealth to make sure tests are processed in a timely fashion with shifts optimized around typical arrival times for test specimens. The whole facility is doing its level best to deal with unprecedented volumes, and that is where Thermo Fisher Scientific comes in. Per Chief Innovation Officer, “The Amplitude machine we installed very recently, just last month actually, allows us to increase the capacity for PCR testing for COVID testing as well as do some things that were very manual in an automated fashion,” quadrupling the rate at which a single 96-well plate of samples could be processed and dramatically reducing technician hands-on time, freeing them for other needs in the laboratory. “Pre-pandemic, no one would ever have thought that a test like this or a machine like this was going to be needed,” and the circumstances of this year make it more needed than it has ever been.
