Selecting a new LIMS
When the laboratory function of Patheon pharma services, a global pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization, upgraded LIMS software at their site in Cork, Ireland, they saw immediate business benefits, paving the way for the organization to further rollout the software across their global sites.
A change of ownership provided the opportunity for the team to replace their existing (and maturing) informatics software with Thermo Scientific™ SampleManager™ LIMS software. The LIMS was deemed to meet the validation, compliance, testing and analytical reporting needs of the business, allowing the lab to better adhere to manufacturing processes, and support its ability to scale-up production, accelerating time-to-market for their customers.
Implementation
The software implementation began at the cusp of the global COVID-19 pandemic—which brought challenges to the installation plan through a predominately remote project implementation workforce— an issue that was successfully managed by the project team.
Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Global Laboratory Office (GLO) and support team, were on-hand throughout the project to guide the design of the SampleManager software configuration, set up and installation, but also to provide ongoing support and training as needed.
Pharma-focused LIMS features
Along with the cloud-based implementation, a series of feature enhancements were subsequently rolled out including multi-level parameters (MLP) for materials specification; sample lifecycle; product workflow; interface to their Chromatography Data System (CDS); Certificates of Analysis; and specification reports.
Following the introduction and evaluation of those features, stability management capabilities were deployed, and finally the Laboratory Execution System (LES), consumables management and simple instrument interface were added.
Impact
The software has already made a pronounced impact on the laboratory’s operation and business output through the software’s capabilities to manage multi-level parameter specifications, to produce certificates of analysis, to strengthen data integrity via the simple instrument capabilities and to better comply with processes and importantly with regulations. A LIMS specialist at the site says “using SampleManager software has meant a reduction in testing backlog and cycle times, even with this increased capacity.” The software also improves data visualization and enhances staff training.
