Pipetting isn’t always glamorous. It’s characterized by repetitive motion and close attention to detail, and it has a small margin for error. This strict and tedious process isn’t ideal, but it is essential to life in the lab. And while the need for and fundamentals of liquid handling haven’t changed–and likely won’t–technology is allowing us to make the process considerably more convenient, comfortable and, dare we say it…even luxurious.
Now more than ever, in the midst of an unprecedented health crisis, our scientists and healthcare professionals need to know they have tools behind them that they can trust in every aspect of their heroic work, including fundamental processes like liquid handling.
The Thermo Scientific™ ClipTip™Pipetting System is the result of nearly 50 years of pipetting innovations. This offers VIPs (Very Important Pipettors, obviously) a feature-rich solution that will have them feeling like the laboratory heroes they are. Boasting an ergonomic design and advanced pipetting functionalities, ClipTip Devices safeguard against some of the most frustrating pipetting challenges labs experience every day for truly worry-free and comfortable liquid handling.
VIPs enjoy several benefits exclusive to the ClipTip Pipetting System that are key to delivering this unique experience. These include:
Access to the only tips that clip
Ensuring a quality seal when pipetting can be one of the most exasperating parts of the job. Most pipettes rely on a friction seal system, which requires the user to bang, check and rock to attach the tips. This can create an unreliable attachment that is either too loose– meaning tips can drop off mid liquid transfer–or too tight–forcing the user to apply uncomfortable and often painful pressure to remove it.
ClipTip interlocking technology clips the tip into place, creating a seamless fit that attaches and ejects without the need for extreme force. The resulting seal ensures a reliable grip that helps eliminate the risk of tips falling off. As such, the ClipTip Pipetting System remains sealed until you decide to eject tips. Even in the most comprehensive applications, including multiple-tip touches and mixing cycles, tip ejection can be accomplished with minimal strain due to the system’s mechanism. These features eliminate many frustrations associated with liquid handling and ensure greater confidence in the accuracy and reproducibility of results.
Precise sample volumes
Another frequent challenge during pipetting is uneven liquid levels in tips. This is common when using traditional friction-based systems due to improper sealing of the tip to the pipette. With these standard systems, the tip can become compromised over time or from repeatedly touching the vessel wall during pipetting. Although the seal could be tight enough to avoid visible leaking and keep the tip attached, that doesn’t mean it’s providing optimal pipetting results.
ClipTip Pipette Tips, on the other hand, have an airtight seal between the sealing ring and the tips, guaranteeing premier pipetting performance. Furthermore, a secure volume locking mechanism on the F1-ClipTip Manual Pipette prevents undesirable volume drift during operation. As detailed in our application note, the tip attachment functionality results in 68 percent less variation in dispensed liquid as compared to a traditional friction-based system.
Ergonomic design
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it’s common for researchers to pipette more than 500 hours per year[1]. This breaks down to nearly 10 hours of lab work per week. As one of the most repetitive activities in the lab, pipette practitioners are at high risk of Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs) to the neck, back, shoulders and hands. Particularly, the repetitive motion of aspirating and dispersing liquid paired with the strain of forcing tips on and off the pipette can put a dangerous burden on muscles, ligaments and tendons across these parts of the body.
The ClipTip Pipetting System eliminates these physical burdens with a remarkably lightweight design that protects users who are required to pipette frequently. Moreover, its low attachment, ejection and plunger forces do more than provide confidence in results; they make using the system an enjoyable experience that feels noticeably different from other pipettes.
From gaining increased confidence in your pipetting results to the physical benefits they provide, the ClipTip Pipetting Systems set a new standard for liquid handling that will redefine how you think about the process. The system comes in several different options for all pipetting needs, including:
- F1-ClipTip Manual Pipettes – The best of our ClipTip Pipetting System technology for comfortable operation and a tight seal you can trust every time, in a manual form factor.
- E1-ClipTip Electronic Pipettes – Boasting the same ClipTip Pipetting System technology you’re sure to love, with additional features like electronic tip ejection and index finger pipette action to ease repetitive pipetting tasks.
- E1-ClipTip Equalizer Pipettes – Our most versatile option, capable of performing sample transfers between a variety of tubes, racks, microplate well densities and horizontal gel boxes with ease using our adjustable tip spacing feature. Learn more about how adjustable tip spacing can reduce repetition and increase time savings.
