Centrifugation plays a critical role in a wide range of laboratory workflows, from cell and gene therapy research through to clinical diagnostics and biopharmaceutical applications.
As laboratory workflows have become more analytically demanding, the performance expectations for centrifuge technologies have increased. With centrifuge systems used for such a broad range of applications, even within the same laboratory, solutions must be highly flexible in terms of capacity and functionality. At the same time, busy laboratories require intuitive and easy-to-use solutions that save time and can be quickly adapted from one application to the next.
Next generation centrifuges to meet the needs of modern laboratories
The Thermo Scientific General Purpose Pro Centrifuge Series is a comprehensive family of products created to address the varying requirements of modern laboratories. The latest additions to this family include new 1.6 L benchtop and 4 L floor-standing centrifuge systems. Both systems fulfill the need for enhanced sample safety and reproducibility, improved ergonomics, and reduced noise levels faced by laboratories working in cell and gene therapy, biopharmaceutical and academic research, as well as in clinical diagnostic fields.
Just like the other centrifuges in the series, these new systems feature unique full-color, glass touchscreen displays that facilitate a simple user interface for immediate, effortless workflow and operation monitoring, as well as easy cleaning. Furthermore, all systems meet the latest global in vitro diagnostics (IVD) standards and medical regulations.
Interchangeable high-speed rotors for flexible functionality
Centrifuge systems in the General Purpose Pro Series provide the scalability and flexibility laboratories need to meet the demands of individual applications and processing steps. In cell and gene therapy research workflows, for example, centrifuge solutions must be capable of supporting the differing requirements of supernatant harvesting, clarification, purification and polishing steps. What’s more, they should also enable manufacturers to quickly scale batch production without the need to invest in new technologies.
The new 4 L systems in the General Purpose Pro Centrifuge Series feature a new high-speed rotor that accommodates both microplates and tubes for full flexibility. This rotor is the latest addition to a comprehensive portfolio of 24 different options (including 11 swinging bucket and 13 fixed angle rotors), to support a wide range of sample capacity requirements. Each rotor can be used interchangeably to align with a host of application needs, from clinical protocols and cell culture procedures to cell and gene therapy research and microplate processing. The portfolio also includes Fiberlite Carbon Fiber Rotors, a lighter, more durable alternative to traditional metal rotors, to provide superior performance and capacity.
Enhanced ergonomics for improved usability and safety
The new 1.6 L benchtop and 4 L floor-standing centrifuges benefit from ergonomically enhanced designs, and feature lower loading and lid grapping heights to improve usability. Both centrifuges allow the quick and safe change of any of the 24 rotors in the General Purpose Pro Centrifuge Series in just three seconds, thanks to the Thermo Scientific Auto-Lock Rotor Exchange function.
This ease of use also extends to the protection of sample integrity – a particularly important consideration in cell and gene therapy research workflows where cell culture contamination can compromise product safety. General Purpose Pro Series centrifuges can be used with certified ClickSeal Biocontainment Lids to securely protect samples, centrifuges and operators. These user-friendly biocontainment solutions can be quickly opened with one hand, eliminating the need for cumbersome multi-turn caps and pressure clips. Additionally, the new centrifuges are built from robust materials that attract less dirt, simplifying cleaning and minimizing the potential for sample contamination, and feature smart fan speed control for improved refrigeration fan noise.
