With more than 75,000 employees in sites around the world, including dozens of manufacturing operations, we have actively engaged our colleagues in a variety of multidisciplinary teams for process improvement, health and well-being, diversity, and community volunteering. Like many sites, our Karlsruhe, Germany product development and manufacturing facility established a Green Team to help the facility improve sustainability and reduce its environmental impact.
Our Green Team was formed in 2016 and initiated the installation of LED lighting, replaced breakroom and cafeteria refrigerators with energy efficient units, and eliminated single-use plastic plates. However successful these sustainability measures were, the team members knew that this was just a start.
Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for the Future initiative, the team collaborated with site leadership to take their efforts to the next level with an ambitious goal of procuring 100 percent green electricity, exclusively produced out of renewable resources like wind, sun, or water.
With support from site and company leaders, the Green Team achieved their goal. After piloting the sourcing project at the Karlsruhe site, the team was able to share best practices and provide a framework for other sites across Germany to migrate their sources of electricity to 100 percent renewable sources over the first half of 2020.
“We are very proud to be contributing toward Thermo Fisher’s target of reducing greenhouse gases by 30 percent by 2030,” said Wolfgang Steinberg, a supply chain planner. “Since the beginning of 2020, our sites in Germany have saved 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to the average carbon dioxide-consumption of 1,162 Germans per year!”
